History/Creation: There are stories about the Kobolds that the Drow down below created centuries ago. Several magic-users had become bored one day and a bet was made regarding the ability to create a race that would serve as both target practice and a kind of pet for the little ones. Several attempts were made to do this but they had all ended up becoming a small disaster.
One magic-user over several months however managed to succeed in their attempt. They used the runts of her riding lizard's clutch of eggs and transmuted them with a few Dwarves that had been taken during a recent raid. The first few results were bloody failures, piles of flesh and bone that sizzled and popped ominously. These were thrown down a gorge while no one was looking and the experiments continued with more zeal.
In the end she did manage to create a brand new race with the last Dwarf at her disposal and the Kobolds were born. They were reptilian in appearance, the size of an adult Dwarf thanks to their mixture of blood.
The first generation acted little more than intelligent dogs, unable to speak or properly think on their own. The Drow however had become charmed with them and they were bred and trained more and more and soon in the kennels and breeding pits the Kobolds started to change...becoming more than dumb pets to be led around on leashes. They taught themselves to watch how the Drow interacted, slowly teaching themselves to form their own culture.
It was the tenth generation of Kobolds that figured out how to unlock their pens. The cages were opened when the Drow were not looking and the former pets and experiments slipped out of the city and escaped deep into the caverns, promising each other that they would never be owned by Drow again.
Offspring/Aging: Kobolds lay eggs with a clutch of usually three to five eggs each. The hatchlings grow quickly, remaining young for one year before becoming fully matured and ready to help protect the clan and care of the other young ones.
Appearance: With their origins being a mixture of Dwarf and Drow riding lizard; the Kobold resemble Dwarf-sized reptilian humanoids. Their bodies are covered in soft but strong scales and their coloring is mostly dark colors, allowing them to blend into their surroundings. A rare few are born with feathered frills on top of their heads and can open and close at will.
Language: The Kobold speak mostly in clicks and whistles, using their teeth and claws. Some have developed a language that uses the movements of their feathered frills on their heads but since Kobolds born with such are rare, it is a second language known only to the frilled kind, making them much more valued as scouts since they can signal each other without giving themselves away.
Diet: Their diet consists mostly of the different fungi and mushrooms that grow down below. Some have become fond of small insects but for the most part they stick with the easy to forage and grow mushrooms and fungi.
Interactions With Other Races: Kobolds try to stay mostly away from other races, especially the Drow that kept them as pets for so long. They are however sympathetic to Outside Races that are sometimes brought down either by becoming lost or being taken as slaves by the Drow. They are more than willing to help these kinds of people get back to the surface, although they are too afraid themselves to slip out themselves.
